MARTIN REES
MB ChB FRACS
Martin Rees is a Cosmetic and Reconstructive Plastic Surgeon who has been in private practice since 1988. His broad ranging practice includes all cosmetic facial, abdominal and breast surgeries, liposculpture, skin cancer and hand surgery.
He is also a Senior Consultant at Middlemore Hospital Regional Centre for Reconstructive Plastic, Maxillo Facial and Hand Surgery, the Co-ordinator of the Cranio Facial Clinic team, with additional interests in Cleft lip and palate, and Microvascular surgery. He is a visiting Consultant to Auckland and Starship Hospital, with operating privileges at all of Aucklands leading private hospitals. He has achieved impressive results with his recent introduction of facial and jaw bone distraction technology which has led to the treatment of previously impossible cases.
Mr. Rees graduated MBChB from Otago Medical School in 1972,
passing his Part I exam for the Royal Australasian College
of Surgeons in 1976. He then joined the Plastic Surgery Unit
with the renowned plastic surgeon Sir William Manchester,
obtaining his FRACS Part II in 1979.
His overseas advanced speciality training, included a three
year fellowship at the eminent Frenchay Plastic Surgery Unit
in Bristol England, followed by two years of additional speciality
training in Australia. As a Microvascular research fellow
at the Royal Melbourne Hospital, Mr. Rees developed new techniques
for studying the anatomy of the vascular system. His findings
were published in the American Journal of Plastic and Reconstructive
Surgery.
To complete his speciality training in Reconstructive and
Cosmetic plastic surgery, Mr. Rees became Senior Registrar
and Cranio Facial Fellow at the Royal Adelaide and Adelaide
Childrens Hospital Cranio Facial Unit. He also gained
further experience in cosmetic facial, abdominal, breast and
liposuction procedures working with Consultants in their private
practices, both in England and Australia. This extensive international exposure tied together
all of his previous training in a broad range of cosmetic
procedures, the management of complex facial fractures, tumours,
and facial reconstruction for children born with facial deformities.
He returned to New Zealand in 1985 as a full-time Consultant
Plastic Surgeon to initiate the establishment of the Cranio
Facial Clinic and also work with the Cleft Lip and Palate
and the Microvascular Free Flap Teams at Middlemore Hospital.
Even though he is intensely active with his professional responsibilities,
Mr. Rees finds time to enjoy tramping, power boating, scuba
diving and windsurfing with his wife and children.
