What is a stomach lift?
Abdominoplasty or ‘tummy tuck’ is not just one single surgical procedure, but a range of techniques for flattening and contouring the abdomen. These range from a minimally invasive endoscopic tightening of the deep tissue layers, to the more common, fully open procedure.

During surgery: In a full abdominoplasty, the long, strap-like abdominal muscles are repaired and rejoined in the midline, the deep supportive tissue is tightened to provide good support and excess skin and fat are trimmed, to restore a smoother and more youthful contour. The navel may be left where it is, or re-positioned for the most natural appearance. Where the area of concern involves both the front and sides, a lower body lift may be required. This involves an incision around the body to remove excess skin and fat over the hips, upper buttocks and abdomen – allowing the soft tissue over the hips and the sides of the thighs to be pulled up and tightened. It takes a little longer to perform, but the results can be dramatic.
In younger patients with moderate lower abdominal slackness (often following a pregnancy), endoscopic or minimal incision surgery may be recommended. If there are significant stretch marks or a flap of skin and fat, a wider resection of tissue, with its longer scar, may be necessary.
In most abdominoplasty cases, tailored liposuction can enhance results by sculpting contours.
