The two liposuction techniques most commonly used are Tumescent and Ultrasonic.
Tumescent liposuction involves the infusion of fluids into the target area prior to suction. Ultrasonic energy may then be applied, which liquefies the fat through the application of high frequency sound waves. With either approach, (often used together), fat is removed by suction via small blunt hollow tubes called cannulas, inserted through tiny incisions (3-4mm). Wherever possible, these are placed discreetly, where the wounds will soon heal to become virtually invisible scars.
After surgery, an elasticised compression garment controls swelling /oedema and keeps the tissues in place while they heal back together.
As liposuction only removes fat and not skin, your surgeon will advise you whether you will also benefit from the removal of excess skin. Following significant weight loss, such as after gastric banding for obesity, this may be necessary from areas such as the arms, the thighs, the sides of the chest and the abdomen.
Other body contouring procedures available include abdominoplasty (tummy tuck), buttock lift, thigh lift and calf implants. Sometimes these surgeries are done in combination with liposuction.
Usually two full consultations with the surgeon are necessary for you and your surgeon to prepare and finalise your surgical plan. You need to know what you want to achieve so the surgeon can deliver your expectations.
