A subtle surgical refinement to enhance comfort and restore balance to the intimate area.

Labiaplasty

Procedure Overview

Labiaplasty is a surgical procedure designed to reshape the labia minora and/or labia majora, addressing concerns related to size, symmetry, or discomfort. Many people seek this procedure not only for aesthetic reasons but also to relieve physical irritation, increase sensitivity or improve comfort during exercise, clothing wear, or daily activities.

The aim is a natural, proportionate result that respects your body’s unique anatomy. Labiaplasty is highly individual, with techniques tailored to each patient’s needs and goals, ensuring results that feel balanced, discreet, and harmonious.

What to expect

  • During your consultation, Dr. de Chalain will discuss your concerns and examine the area to determine whether labiaplasty is appropriate. Together, you’ll explore goals, options, and what to expect in terms of healing and results, with sensitivity and discretion. Multiple consultations may be recommended to ensure you feel comfortable and informed. The decision to undergo a labiaplasty is highly personal, and there is never any pressure to proceed with surgery.

  • You will be given detailed instructions on how to prepare for surgery by our expert team. Preparing your home for an easier recovery by ensuring essentials are within easy reach is often recommended.

  • Dr. de Chalain favours a wedge excision technique, reducing the bulk of the labia minora and leaving only a thin, fine radial scar with minimal effect on sensation and function. The technique can be suitably modified to address asymmetry and excess clitoral hood tissue.

The great majority of cases are performed under local anaesthetic. After numbing the vulval area with a topical anaesthetic cream, the local anaesthetic injections are virtually pain-free and are easily tolerated. Sedation or general anaesthesia is also available for patients who would prefer it.

  • You may experience mild swelling, bruising, or tenderness. Antibiotic ointment and pad dressings are applied to protect the area, and you will be given guidance on hygiene and aftercare. Keeping the vulval area elevated by lying flat with a cushion under the buttocks, along with the application of ice packs, will help to limit swelling and bruising. You will be given full instructions regarding the resumption of normal activities. As this is a day-case procedure, patients are able to return home on the same day.

  • Initial discomfort gradually improves over several days, and most normal daily activities can be resumed within a week, though sexual activity and strenuous exercise should be avoided for several weeks. Swelling and sensitivity will continue to improve over several months, revealing the final refined result. Sutures used in this procedure are self-dissolving and do not require removal.

  • You’ll return for follow-up visits to monitor healing and receive personalised guidance for ongoing care. These appointments ensure optimal healing, comfort, and satisfaction with the results.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Yes, labiaplasty is increasingly common and widely performed. Many people seek it to address practical discomfort or personal preferences, and it can improve wellbeing when pursued for your own comfort and confidence.

  • Good candidates are people who experience discomfort from elongated or uneven labia, for example rubbing, chafing or pulling during exercise, sex, or when wearing tight clothing. It may also be chosen by those who simply wish to change their appearance. Candidates should be in good general health and have realistic expectations.

  • While many people choose labiaplasty for aesthetic reasons, functional concerns are very common. The procedure can help to reduce discomfort during activities like cycling, running, or intimacy, and may improve confidence in both daily life and intimate settings.

  • Most people experience swelling, mild discomfort, and sensitivity for the first couple of weeks. Recovery typically takes around 4–6 weeks, with most returning to non-strenuous activities after 1 week. Intimate activity and vigorous exercise are usually avoided for 4–6 weeks to allow tissues to heal fully.

  • Incisions are placed along the natural folds of the labia, and because this area heals exceptionally well, scars are usually minimal and fade significantly over time. Most patients find them barely noticeable once healing is complete.

  • When performed by an experienced surgeon, labiaplasty typically does not reduce sexual sensation. In some cases it may even increase sexual sensation by removing excess skin covering the clitoris. Furthermore, many patients report feeling more comfortable and confident after labiaplasty, which can enhance sexual wellbeing. However, as with any surgery, there are risks, and sensation changes are possible, though rare.

  • Results are long-lasting and usually permanent, though natural changes from aging, childbirth, or hormonal shifts may subtly affect the tissues over time.

  • Yes. Labiaplasty is sometimes performed alongside other body contouring or intimate wellness procedures, including post-pregnancy body contouring (“mummy makeover”) or perineal rejuvenation. Dr. de Chalain can provide guidance on whether combining procedures is appropriate for you.

  • The cost varies depending on the specific technique, whether both the labia minora and majora are addressed, and the surgical setting. A detailed quote is provided after consultation, tailored to your goals and anatomy. For more information on how we price our procedures, see our Pricing Information page.
